The Atlantic Council of Finland (ACF) is an independent, non-partisan, non-governmental and not-for-profit organization with 597 members. According to its rules the purpose of the ACF is to promote Euro-Atlantic discussion, research, education and information with a special focus on foreign and security policy issues - especially related to the NATO and EU - in Finland. The ACF is a discussion forum and networking arena in foreign and security policy oriented people in Finland. The ACF organizes discussion events and seminars, publishes and disseminates reports, policy papers and information material as well as execute education activities. The Atlantic Council of Finland was founded on 16 of December 1999.
OrganisationThe Atlantic Council of Finland has a Chairman, two Vice-Chairmen, a Board and a Secretary General. The first Chairman of the organisation was Minister (Hon.), Ambassador (ret.) Mr Jaakko Iloniemi (years 1999-2001). He was succeeded by Minister (Hon.), Ambassador (ret.) Mr Paavo Rantanen (years 2002-2004) and director of Finnish Business and Policy Forum EVA, Dr Risto E. J. Penttilä (years 2005 - 2008). The current Chairperson Mrs Liisa Jaakonsaari, Member of European Parliament, was elected in December 2008.
The Council also hosts a Youth Network with its own chairman and an executive board.

Ms Terhi Suominen M.Soc.Sc. The Atlantic Council of Finland is an associate member of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA). The ATA, founded in 1954, is an organization of 42 Atlantic Councils. The ATA acts as a network facilitator in the Euro-Atlantic area and beyond. The Atlantic Councils of NATO member countries are full members of the ATA. Associate Members of the ATA consist of Atlantic Councils from non-NATO member countries which have signed the NATO Partnership for Peace (PfP) Agreement. The Atlantic Council of Finland is actively involved with the ATA network as well as with events organized by other Atlantic Councils.
