ATLANTIC TREATY ASSOCIATION The Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA), created on 18 June 1954, groups the voluntary national and non-governmental organizations established in each of the 19 countries having signed the North Atlantic Treaty, organizations aimed at promoting this Treaty's objectives. Since 1996 the ATA has welcomed - as Associate Members - the non-governmental organizations created in PfP countries. The representatives of Associate Members attend and participate in ATA Assembly and Council meetings under the same conditions as Members, short of voting on amendments to the Constitution and on the dissolution of the ATA. There is an Atlantic organization in every European and North American country, except Ireland and Switzerland. The Atlantic Council of Finland (ACF), established on 16 December 1999, was accepted as an Associate Member of ATA in the 46th General Assembly of ATA in Budapest on 3 November 2000. The purposes of the ATA are: (a) to educate and inform the public concerning the missions and responsibilities of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (b) to conduct research into the various purposes and activities of that Organization and the development of their extension to countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as to pursue a dialogue with those bordering the Mediterranean (c) to promote the solidarity of the peoples of the North Atlantic area and of those whose governments have signed with NATO PfP agreements (d) to promote democracy (e) to develop, as determined under this Constitution, permanent cooperation between all its member organizations for a better achievement of such purposes.
